Our Barrie St. site was re-allocated by the Alma Mater Society, and the old office now serves as storage until we can move into offices in the JDUC (expected for the new year). Description:
Over the winter semester OPIRG has been developing the bureaucratic and infrastructural resources necessary to launch a campus-based computer refurbishment and recycling operation: Free Geek Kingston. Now that our operational needs are met we require a self-motivated and well-organized candidate to begin raising Free Geek's profile and building volunteer capacity. Free Geek Kingston co-ordinator
Reports to:
OPIRG Kingston Board of Directors
Overall responsibility:
The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of Free Geek Kingston operations, as well as staffing the site during operational hours.
Key areas of responsibility:
Promotion of anti-oppression mandate.
Volunteer recruitment, training, co-ordination and retention.
Building equipment donation and distribution networks.
Development of resources for new users.
Sourcing free software solutions for system builds.
Maintaining communication infrastructure (e-mail, website and facebook).
Consults with:
OPIRG Kingston co-ordinator.
Terms of employment:
10 weeks, beginning early May.
40hrs a week.
9.50$/hr.
Qualifications:
Must be a student returning to full-time study this fall.
Some experience with content-management software.
Confidence in problem-solving within a linux environment.
Working knowledge of hardware anatomy.
Commitment to anti-oppression and cultivating Free Geek as a safe space.
Affinity with the Free Software Movement.
Ability to communicate Free Geek's mission to a wide variety of audiences (clients, volunteers, donors and bureaucrats).
The candidate must be able to work independently and be well organized.
Experience with volunteer co-ordination an asset.
We have been busy here at Free Geek, we are gearing up to accept your e-waste donations starting in April! We are also excited to be registering as a collection site and re-user/refurbisher with Ontario E-waste Stewardship. Stuff is getting added to the site daily, have a look around.
Our first collection will be on Queen's Campus with the Campus E-waste Crew, April 7th, 8th and 9th. Queen's Students can bring their e-waste to the JDUC between 10am and 2pm on those dates. Contact us for more details.
